Dialing Out

You're ready to connect to the Internet! The steps below outline how to get online.

• Double-click on Shortcut to Mid-Mo icon on the desktop screen to connect
  
• The Connect To window will appear (below)

  

• Type your Username and Password in the appropriate boxes, remember these are case sensitive; check Save password if you do not want to have to type your password each time you connect (if it is not checkable read the Mid-Mo FAQ on how to fix this)
  • If you need to disable Call Waiting on your line, click on Dial Properties and check the box in front of This location has Call Waiting and enter the code to disable it in the box and click OK
  • If Dial Properties is not available, go back to the connection in Dial-Up Networking folder and check the box next to "Use counrty code and area code"/"Use area code and dialing properties" (be aware of what it does to you access number in this "Connect to" window).
• Click on Connect
• The modem status window below will appear and you should hear your modem dialing

  

• You will see an indication that the computer is Dialing, Verifying Username and Password and Logging on to Network
• When the screen changes to either of the Connected screens (below), you have made a successful connection

  If you check Do not show this dialog box in the future and click Close, the dialing window will shrink down to the taskbar and this will be the only indication you are connected from now on:

  Open a WWW browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator
  *** Be sure to use the Mid-Mo Page as your start page address***
  http://www.mid-mo.net

• To disconnect, first close the browser window, then:
  • depending on which version of Windows 95/98/NT you have, the dialer window may still be showing on the desktop and you can see the Disconnect button.
  • if it is minimized on your task bar as a Connected To… button click once on that button to open that window back up to see the Disconnect button.
  • if you have an icon of two computers connected, right-click on that icon and left-click on Disconnect.
• It may take a few moments to close the window and shut off the modem (you may hear a click from your modem).

• To connect from now on, you can:
  • use the method described above of double-clicking the Shortcut to Mid-Mo icon, clicking Connect, then double-clicking on the Internet Explorer icon once the connection is established or
  • double-click the Internet Explorer icon which will automatically bring up a Dial-up Connection window where you can click Connect; the browser will continue to load through the connection process. However, you need to be aware of which Dial-up Connection window is brought up (look at what comes after "Connect to;" it isn't necessarily the connection you have configured for Mid-Missouri Internet). Also, if there is a problem with the connection itself (line noise, incorrect access number, username or password, or the connection just takes a long time to complete) the browser will continue to load and give an incorrect error message regarding the web site when in fact the problem is in the dialer.
