Creating a Connection with the Internet Connection Wizard (IE4)

Start the Internet Connection Wizard by right-clicking on the Internet Explorer icon, click the Connection tab, then click the Connect button.
Select the second option (I have and existing Internet account…) and click Next.
Click the first option (Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet service provider…) and click Next.
Select Connect using my phone line and click Next.
In the Choose Modem window, you modem should already be selected (you will have to go through the Install New Modem Wizard if it is not), click Next.
The Dial-Up Connection window will allow you to select a connection if one is already set up (most computers are coming with pre-configured connections to AOL or MSN – don’t select these). In most cases you should select Create a New Dial-Up Connection and click Next.
Enter the area code (660) in the Area code window and the 7-digit access number in the Telephone number window (if you need to dial 1-660 for a COS number or *70 to disable call waiting, do not add it in this screen); click Next.
Enter your username and password as they were given to you in the information you received from Mid-Missouri Telephone and click Next.
In the Advanced Settings window, select No and click Next.
In the Dial-Up Connection Name window, you can change the name to something shorter, like Mid-Mo (this is just the name of the icon – it doesn’t matter what it’s name really is), click Next.
If Outlook Express or Internet Mail is installed on the computer, you will next be asked to configure the mail settings; select Yes and click Next.
Select Create a new Internet mail account and click Next.
Enter the Display name (the name people will see when they receive mail from you) and click Next.
Enter your E-mail address as it appears on the information you received from Mid-Mo and click Next.
Select POP3 as the type of incoming server; the server names are mail.mid-mo.net (both incoming and outgoing); click Next.
Keep the dot in Logon using and enter your username and password as it appears on the information you received from Mid-Mo; click Next.

Click No to set up a News Server, and No to set up an LDAP server, then click Finish.

To put a shortcut to that dialer on your desktop, double-click My Computer then double-click Dial-Up Networking. Right-click on your connection (whatever you named it above) and click Create shortcut, click Yes to the error message (you do want it on the desktop) and close the Dial-Up Networking and My Computer windows.

Connecting to the Internet

To connect to the Internet, double-click on the Shortcut to Mid-Mo icon and enter your user name and password as they were given to you in the information you received from Mid-Missouri Telephone.

Note: If your access number includes a 1-660 (so it looks like a long distance call; it’s actually a COS number) or you must dial a number to access an outside line or you wish to disable call waiting with *70, you must click the Dial Properties button and check the appropriate boxes. Click OK to return to the Connect To window.

Do not add any dial around codes to this number or you will be charged long distance usage
Do not allow an office key system to add any dial around codes or you will be charged long distance usage
Do not dial your access number from any other community or you will be charged long distance usage

Click on Connect.
The modem status window will appear and you should hear you modem dialing; the window will read Dialing, Verifying Username and Password, then Logging on to Network.
When the screen changes to one of those pictured below, you have made a successful connection.

Double-click the icon named Internet Explorer on your desktop to launch the Internet Explorer browser and enter the Mid-Missouri Internet homepage address (www.mid-mo.net). To set it as your start page, click View, then Internet Options, then click the Use Current button.
To disconnect, first close the browser and click the Disconnect button on the dialer.

Depending on which version of Windows 95/98/NT you have, the dialer window may still be showing on the desktop and you can see the Disconnect button (Figure 2).
If it is minimized on your task bar as a Connected To… button click once on that button to open that window back up to see the Disconnect button.
If you have an icon of two computers connected (Figure 4), right-click on that icon and left-click on Disconnect.

It may take a few moments to close the window and shut off the modem (you may hear a click from your modem).
To connect from now on, you can:

use the method described above of double-clicking the Shortcut to Mid-Mo icon, clicking Connect, then double-clicking on the Internet Explorer icon once the connection is established or
double-click on the Internet Explorer icon which will automatically bring up a Dial-up Connection window where you can click Connect; the browser will continue to load through the connection process. However, you need to be aware of which Dial-up Connection window is brought up (look at what comes after "Connect to;" it isn’t necessarily the connection you have configured for Mid-Missouri Internet). Also, if there is a problem with the connection itself (line noise, incorrect access number, username or password, or the connection just takes a long time to complete) the browser will continue to load and give an incorrect error message regarding the web site when in fact the problem is in the dialer.
